I know this sounds against your instincts right now, but if you want to raise a future activist, the best thing you can do right now is not expose your toddler to protests or protest coverage. Let me explain why.
Between the ages of 0 and 7, a child doesn’t understand what a protest is actually about. She has no concept of policy, injustice, or the cause you care about. What she does understand is the room — your jaw, your voice, the tension in your grip on her hand. She absorbs the fear, the anger, the adrenaline of the crowd, and she stores it as a feeling, not an idea.
So the lesson she walks away with isn’t “we stand up for what’s right.” It’s “the world outside is tense and unsafe.” That’s not activism being planted — that’s anxiety being planted.
So what actually builds a future activist? Show her what goodness looks like before you show her what’s wrong with the world. Let her see someone help a stranger. Let her see you be kind to a person . Let her see fairness, generosity, people being taken care of. A child can’t fight for a better world if she’s never seen one — you can’t aim at a target you’ve never been shown.
Give her the template first. when she’s old enough to turn it into purpose instead of fear.
Most importantly- make sure disagreement doesn’t mean disrespect in your house. Make her feel safe when she disagrees. Because authority is authority. Our nervous system can’t tell difference between parent, manager or president.
